Theory & Practice has expertise in the assessment and treatment of a wide array of learning differences and psychological concerns, including:

Theory & Practice also provides assessment and treatment for children and adolescents whose difficulties are more widespread and/or may have experienced specific risk factors such as certain medical conditions or head injuries.  

 

Initial Consultation. To fully understand your needs and determine the appropriate procedures, we engage in an initial consultation prior to beginning assessment and/or treatment services. During your initial consultation we discuss the presenting concern with you and obtain a developmental history. Upon completion, we share our preliminary impressions and make recommendations for further assessment, treatment, and/or provide you with an appropriate referral.  You should evaluate this information along with your own opinions as to whether or not you or your child would feel comfortable working with us. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask them during your initial consultation or at any other time during the assessment or treatment process. The initial consultation session typically lasts approximately 90 minutes.

 

Neuropsychological Assessment. The neuropsychological assessment process generally requires multiple meetings. The typical length of each individual assessment session is 120 minutes (two session hours); however the time may vary depending on the nature of the referral and types of assessments administered. The procedures utilized may include interview, record review, behavioral observation, as well as testing with measures of intellectual functioning, academic skills, attention, motivation, motor abilities, language, spatial skills, problem solving, memory, and emotional functioning. Upon completion, we will discuss findings, treatment recommendations, and referral information during a feedback meeting. This information will also be documented in a written report. 

 

Treatment. Treatment at Theory & Practice is both evidence-based and individually-tailored. Following a thorough clinical evaluation, we discuss with you diagnostic impressions and engage in collaborative treatment planning. This process aims to insure that your child's and family's needs are met in a knowledgeable, professional, and compassionate manner. Treatment is often cognitive-behavioral in nature, but may also involve family therapy, behavioral parent training, or other skills training approaches.  A psychotherapy session typically lasts approximately 45-minutes, although the actual time per visit may vary depending on session goals.
